Madhavi Mudgal epitomizes the elegance and sophistication that are the result of blending modern sensibilities with the ancient ethos of eastern India to create the highly lyrical dance art of Odissi. Mudgal’s command over the nritta or purely ornamental aspect of Odissi is striking. Her delicate postures and strong rhythmic footwork combine in an appealing flow of sculpturesque movements. Her subtle abhinaya (the expressional aspect of dance), musical knowledge and aesthetic sense add to the highly distinctive character of her recitals.
Mudgal is… lyrical, ever-flowing. She radiates an inner calm; movement seems to pour from out of her soul (Review from Ballet Magazine) Madhavi Mudgal seems to stroke movement from out of her fingertips, releasing it like a butterfly into the air, her face and darting eyes suggest a young girl’s endless hopes, dreams and desires. Dakshina will open the evening with the company premiere of “Tulsi: A Life in Balance.” Drawing on the myths surrounding the various incarnations of the holy basil plant of Tulsi as queen and goddess, the work explores the complex character of Tulsi through the many tales that bring her to life in Indian mythology. This work continues artistic director Daniel Phoenix Singh’s development of a signature style that brings together Modern Dance and Bharata Natyam as a syncretic whole on stage. While the work was conceived and began taking shape over 18 months ago, the recent spate of gender violence have made the creation of this work poignant and symbolic for Singh.
