AnitaRatnamBNSPIRALS: a convergence of dance, poetry, and music–an evening of collaborative work presented by Anita Ratnam, Anil Srinivasan, and Sikkil Gurucharan. Each artist will share their unique vantage point during the evening’s work whether it is by dance, vocal performance, or the piano performance. While these legendary artists often collaborate on their work, this is the first time they are appearing together–we have our own Washington DC World Premiere!

The three Goddesses Saraswati, Meenakshi, and Lakshmi form the trinity of wisdom, bravery, and wealth. Ms Ratnam explores the personae of these three powerful icons in Indian mythology. The work spirals around 3 artistes, 3 scapes, and 3 moods. Together, they evoke a questioning wife, a martial princess, a playful beauty, a flowing river, a charging trident, blooming lotus. The divine trinity in a contemporary context: Saraswati, Meenakshi, and Lakshmi.

Interpreted and performed through piano, voice and dance, the artists spiral their work to create intersections in sound and movement; dance and design; melody and mood. Inspired by the iconic and inspiring tropes of Indian Goddess imagery, myth and metaphor, celebrated contemporary performer Anita Ratnam brings a dazzling new look to familiar stories. Inviting the celebrated music team of Anil Srinivasan and Sikkil Gurucharan, whose sound has been shadowing Ratnam’s Neo Bharatam presentations for 10 years, SPIRALS offers endless ideas and possibilities. Dynamic choreography and compositions that reference the traditional masters and infused with contemporary possibilities, SPIRALS presents three strands of intersecting and divergent energies.

anil-srinivasan Anil Srinivasan is a classical musician and composer who has now come to be regarded as one of the frontrunners of his generation. He has collaborated extensively with artists ranging from Mandolin Srinivas to Sikkil Gurucharan, working as far afield as Korea, the UK, the Far East and Australia – experimenting, crafting and creating new vocabularies in music. Anil holds the Sangeet Natak Akademi Yuva Puraskar for Creative and Experimental Music, the first to be awarded in this category since the award was instituted.

For all his accomplishments in music, his educational background could not have been more different. With an M.Phil from Columbia Business School and an MBA from the University of Southern California, Anil is also an entrepreneur, having created a mission to take music to primary schools using innovative methodologies and applications. He founded Rhapsody, a music education company which currently reaches out to over 3000 children in the city of Chennai. Anil is a regular speaker at conferences, seminars and conclaves on music, education and entrepreneurship.

AD-Sikkil_Photo2SmallSikkil Gurucharan is a leading musician and a youth ambassador for Carnatic music in India today. A prime time artiste during the Chennai music season and a recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar award and Isai Peroli among many. Gurucharan has not only made a mark in the traditional concert paddhati style but also worked to broaden audience appeal by creating collaborative projects with world renowned musicians while retaining the spirit of the art form. The album “Miles from India”, a collaborative effort, was nominated for the Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 51st Grammy Awards. The magazine India Today featured him among 35 Game Changers under the age of 35 in India. For the Washington DC performances he will be collaborating with Anita Ratnam and the esteemed dancer couple Shanta and VP Dhananjayan. He is based in Chennai India, but tours extensively around the world promoting the arts and serving as a cultural ambassador.

For the second half of the evening we are excited to present Renjith and Vijna, a dynamic dance couple who have been taking the art of the duet to new levels.

Their aim is to extend the boundaries of Indian traditional dance and create a new benchmark in the aesthetics of presentation by using innovative dance techniques. They strive to inculcate a higher quality in their performances that will inspire, entertain and educate a diverse audience.

The couple work together as creative partners in molding complete individuals through their brainchild: Dhwani – Temple of Performing Arts. They are undoubtedly a perfect couple in the younger generation of prominent ‘Dance Duos’ in India representing the élan that signifies the principle of Shakti and Shiva in spiritual parlance.
