A FREE community performance will take place at 2 pm on Sunday October 23 by the following companies: Lakshmi Babu (Kuchipudi) and Shanthi Ashok (Bharata Natyam)

ALIF LAILA Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, began the formal study of sitar under Ustad Mir Qasem Khan, nephew of the legendary maestro, Ustad Alauddin Khan(Ravi Shankar’s guru). She further continued under the tutelage of Partha Chatterjee, Krishna Bhatt and Kushal Das. Also an accomplished painter, Laila has a BA degree from the Fine Arts Department, Dhaka University.
She has performed in prestigious venues like, The Kennedy Center, The Shakespeare Theater ,Wash DC,The Purcell Room, South Bank Center, London, The  Nehru Center, London, The Bengal Festival, Dhaka, The India International Center, New Delhi etc This spring she had a concert tour of Europe that included her  performance “Music For Peace’ at UNESCO, Paris. She has recorded and performed with world renowned tabla artists such as Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Ustad Tari Khan  – collaborated with South Indian classical, Jazz saxophone – composed for Sitar/Cello duet and music for dance (Dakshina Dance Company). She has combined her sitar concerts with her water color paintings in major venues in the US, UK and Bangladesh.
She is featured in the ‘Touring Artists Roster’ of the Maryland State Arts Council. She has received the prestigious Individual Artist’s Award from MSAC and AHCMC. Alif established her music school, Sitar Niketan, in Bethesda MD that has presented, the first ever, sitar ensemble in the Wash DC area.
Her DVD ‘Hridayaragam’, was featured in the’ Women’s History Month’, Smithsonian, Wash DC. And ‘Strings of Resonance” was nominated as the best classical music, in Dhaka. Laila’s upcoming CD of world music Ekavali (The Connecting Thread) with sitar/world melodies/world percussion, symbolizes the unity of humanity. She established her music school Sitar Niketan in Feb. 2015.


Closing performance: Kuchipudi Dance Academy (Lakshmi Babu) presents the story of Lord Vinayaka.
Featuring Concept and Choreography by Guru Pasumarthi Ramalinga Sastry, and in the lead role of Gajasura Guru Vedantam Raghava.

lakshmibabusmallThe Dance Ballet draws on the many Indian myths to portray the story about the Lord VINAYAKA (Ganesha), the VIGHNARAJA, the Lord who wards off all obstacles. In the Hindu traditions no  pooja  or prayer is started without first invoking the blessings of the lord. As Vinayaka he is present in all of our consciousness and this dance brings together the various myths that leads to his birth and position in the pantheon of the Hindu deities.

Lakshmi Babu has been awarded her the title ‘Nava Natya Kala Vibhushani’, during Guru Poornima celebration at Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, Washington DC, in 2001. She was also awarded the Teacher Recognition Certificate by the National Foundation for the advancement in the Arts (USA) 2004-05 Arts Recognition and Talent Search Program. Playing an active role in the Washington DC area cultural and community events Lakshmi has been associated with voluntary positions at various socio-cultural Organizations. She is the founding member of the Capitol Area Telugu Cultural Society (CATS) and served as the Executive Director of Cultural affairs during the first years. She has been an active member of the Indian Dance Educators Association (IDEA), Washington DC area, since 1993 and Cultural Director an member of the board at GWTCS for more than a decade in the past.
