A FREE community performance will start the evening off at 6 pm in the Lab Theater.  Companies featured include: Akila Subramanyam (Bharata Natyam) and Bratati Saha (Kathak).

Opening Artist: Rehan Bashir will present Shahgird (A work in progress). The performance is an ode to his Guru, Nahid Siddiqui and the spiritual essence of beauty and alignment which form the foundations of her teachings. Rehan will be exploring traditional aspects of Kathak of the Lucknow gharana and will be paying homage to the sufi spirit and heritage of the Punjab, which is where he began his journey in Kathak. It is also the picturesque place where he currently lives.

Rehan Bashir has a bachelor of Fine Arts from The National College of Arts Lahore and went on to pursue a graduate degree in Fine Arts from Parsons The New School For Design, New York, after being awarded the Fulbright scholarship in 2009. He is currently an assistant professor in the MA Visual Arts program at the NCA, facilitating and mentoring graduate students to further their studio practice. He has been training to become a classical dancer since 2011 under the guidance of Nahid Siddiqui and has been teaching yoga in Lahore since May 2014. Rehan Bashir is a fashion designer and designs bespoke bridal couture at The House of Kamiar Rokni, which has been regularly showcasing it’s work in Lahore and recently in Paris as well.
Closing Artist: Aswathy Nair presents an unique evening of Mohini Attam
aswathynairsmallAswathy started her training under her mother, renowned dancer, Smt. Kalamandalam Saraswathy, at the tender age of four, giving her first stage performance at the age of seven. Aswathy is trained in three forms of dance, namely Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi. She began her training in Mohiniyattam under her mother and now continues under, Smt. Kalamandalam Leelamma, one of the most illustrious names in Mohiniyattam.  She is a recipient of the Senior Scholarship for Mohiniyattam, instituted by the Dept. of Culture, Ministry of H.R.D. She has received the prestigious ‘YUVA KALA BHARATHI’ award from Bharat Kalachar, Chennai in December 2010 and KALA RATNA Award from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Department, Kerala in January 2013.


Aswathy will present three traditional items from the Mohini Attam repertoire that starts with an invocatory item and then follows this with a more in depth character exploration from a scene in the Indian epic Mahabaratha.  Following this she will conclude the program with a Mangalam-part blessing/part celebration of the joyous nature of the evening and the dance. Dakshina is honored to be presenting Rehan Bashir and Aswathy Nair as the opening artists of our festival.
