Dakshina Collaborators

Dancers:

Karen Bernstein has been performing and teaching in the Washington DC area for the past 30 years. She has performed as a principal dancer with the CityDance Ensemble, Karen & Alvin, Maryland Dance Theater, Jan Van Dyke and Dancers, Perlo/Bloom & Co., and CODA. From 1987 to 2001 she Co-Founded/Directed "Karen & Alvin", one of the most accomplished dance partnerships in the Washington, DC area, with Alvin Mayes. As Associate Director of CityDance Ensemble from 2001-2005, she was an integral part in the company’s recognition as the “preeminent” dance company and dance education organization in the area. Currently she is working as Development Assistant for BlackRock Center for the Arts, as an Art Consultant for the Arts Education Initiative for the DC Collaborative and a Dance Consultant for three local dance companies.

Emily Berry is the Artistic Director of B3W, which has performed in the US, England & Mexico. She has performed with Ann Arbor Dance Works, Boris Willis Moves, Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh & Company, Lesole’s Dance Project, Michele Dunleavy, and Ashe Moyubba Afro-Cuban Folkloric Dance Ensemble. Emily is a Certified Movement Analyst. She also has a MFA in dance from George Mason University. She has taught at Oakland University, George Mason University, Marymount University, Coppin State University, Montgomery College, and the Community College of Baltimore County.

Lesole Maine is the artistic director of Lesole's Dance Project. He was born in Sebokeng, South Africa. He has been a guest artist at the University of Colorodo, the Community College of Baltimore County, Coppin State University, and Goucher College. Lesole has worked with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as well as companies in South Africa, France, and Canada. He has also performed and taught dance workshops in several countries including: Canada, Cote d’Ivoire, Croatia, France, Germany, Holland, Jordan, Lesotho, Malaysia, Nigeria, Portugal, Switzerland and the United States. Lesole is currently working with Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Step Afrika, Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh and Company, and B3W.

Nicole McClam graduated from East Carolina University with a BFA in Dance Performance and a BA in Chemistry, then apprenticed with Pennsylvania Dance Theatre for their 2000-2001 season. With PDT, she was able to perform works by guest artists Ben Munisteri and Claire Porter. Nicole relocated to the DC area in 2001 and has had the pleasure of working with many different artists such as Deborah Riley, Reggie Glass, and Meisha Bosma as well as pursue her other interests of teaching and costuming. Currently, Nicole is the Academy Director and instructor at Metropolitan Ballet Theatre. She dances with Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh and B3W, and designs wedding dresses in her spare time.

Melissa Greco began her dance training at the age of four when she lived in Manila, Philippines and hasn’t stopped since. She earned her BFA in dance from Mason Gross School for the Arts at Rutgers University, NJ. In 2001 she moved to the DC area and joined CityDance Ensemble, with whom she has had the pleasure of performing the works of Vladimir Angelov, Adrian Bolton, Dana Tai Soon Burgess, Paul Emerson, Eric Hampton, Ludovic Jolivet and Doug Varone. In addition to Daniel Phoenix Singh, Melissa is currently working with Gesel Mason.

Lighting Designer:

Dan Ribaudo designs lighting, video projections, and soundscapes for people who have something to say. He greatly enjoys working with the Dakshina troupe. Dan Ribaudo has designed for WPAS, Woolly Mammoth, Catalyst Theatre, Rorshach Theatre, scores of cultural performances, and a few hard-to-find video installation happenings. He owes a lot to the good folks at the University of Maryland's departmentof theatre. He is now Assistant Technical Director at the Washington National Opera.

Project Assistants:

Carolyn Kamrath is studying Dance and Economics at The George Washington University. Her initial dance training came from the San Ramon Valley Dance Academy in San Ramon, CA. She is enjoying the opportunity to learn the administrative side of running a non-profit dance company through her work with Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh and Company.

Lauren Stash is a student of Dance and English, finishing her bachelor's degree at The George Washington University. In her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, she danced with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and worked as an intern with the Pittsburgh Dance Alloy.
