2015 Creation Fund Match
Dear Friends of Dakshina:
Dakshina is excited to announce that it has received a prestigious commissioning grant to create a new dance poetry work “Mortal Tongues, Immortal Voices” based on the work of writers lost to AIDS. This project is deeply influenced by the Anthology, “Persistent Voices: Poetry by Writers Lost to AIDS”, edited by Philip Clark and David Groff. Dakshina is the only dance company of 15 awardees selected from a competitive pool of 120 submissions for the grant.
This grant is a significant validation of Dakshina’s position as a leader in the dance discipline and will help us create a new multi-media dance poetry project that engages and connects with community members on a whole new scale. “The Innovate DC grantees exemplify the District’s dynamic, innovative community and support our creative economy,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “The new grant offers a fresh start for arts-based organizations who work to enrich our community and create pathways to the middle class.”

This grant is a matching grant and Dakshina is setting up a three-phase match raising initiative to raise $100,000 by April 1, 2015. We’re kicking off this fundraising goal as part of our End of Year ask, and will use it as our anchor for the first quarter of 2016. With your support we can bring this new project that uses dance, poetry, and mobile apps to address issues around universal principles of health, love, isolation, and eventually finding a community to weather the storms of life. “Innovate DC is about supporting District arts pioneers to foster sustainability,” said Kay Kendall, Chair of the DCCAH. “The Commission’s grants are investments in our amazing arts for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
We’ve already raised $38,000 and need your help in raising the remaining match of $62,000. Our first goal is to raise $30,000 by December 31, 2015 and to raise the remainder of the $32,000 by March 31, 2016. With your help, we can make it to our goal of raising the $100,000 match by March 31, 2016. Donate today and keep us on our feet!
