Saturdays June 13/20 at 1 pm (Adults).  Sundays June 14/21 at 3:30 pm (Families) Sackler pavilion, Smithsonian (1050 Independance Avenue).  Interactive workshop exploring Anish Kapoor’s steel sculpture S-Curve.

Daniel Phoenix Singh will be leading an interactive workshop in collaboration with the Freer and Sackler, Smithsonian exploring the relationship between sculpture and dance. The Sensual S: Form and Movement, is designed for participants to experience the intersections of sculpture, body, and environment. Interact with the shiny surfaces of Anish Kappor’s steel sculpture S-Curve as well as with the Indian sculpture in the Sackler Gallery to explore how scale, shape, and form reflect and distort perceptions. Join Singh and senior company members for this unique experience.

The Board of Directors of Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company, cordially invite you to a cocktail reception to celebrate Srimathi Shanta and Sri VP Dhananjayan.

The Dhananjayans received the Padma Bhushan Award from President Pratibha Patil at the civil investiture ceremony in New Delhi on March 31, 2009 for development, preservation and propagation of the best of Bharata Natyam. Dakshina has established a Fund in their honor to make Indian dance a central part of the DC Metro area community. Read more about the reception here.

Bharata Natyam Workshop with master teachers the Dhananjayans

The two are pioneers in the dance world and have created their own distinct style known for its range and depth. They have performed together for over 50 years and trained hundreds of other artistes through their dance academy “Bharata Kalanjali” in Chennai. Their legendary accomplishments and service were recognized with the Padma Bhushan award by the President of India in March 0f 2009.

This is a golden opportunity to interact and learn directly from the all time greats of a living tradition of Indian classical performing art — Bharata Natyam. For details and registration information, click here.
